Beyond the AR: Buying Your First AK, and Why It Should Probably Be a Zastava ZPAPM70

Recently, we’ve been flooded with questions about AKs over on our sister blog, ARBuildJunkie. It seems like more and more enthusiasts are looking to branch out from their AR collections and explore something new and exciting. To get to the bottom of this shift, we dove deep into the AK market, and one name kept coming up: the Zastava M70. In 2024, it’s clear that for AR-15 fans, the classic appeal of the AK-47 platform—and the standout reputation of the Zastava ZPAPM70—has become nearly impossible to ignore.

In 2024, if you’re considering buying your first AK, you should seriously look at the Zastava ZPAPM70. We’re going in-depth in the coming months about our specific M70, but for now, know that we could simply not be more impressed, and if you’re looking for a feeling similar to when you bought your very first AR, we’d advise you to pick up one of these Serbian beauties ASAP.

Why a Zastava M70?

There comes a point where, after owning so many ARs, the desire to add an AK to the collection becomes strong. The AK platform is such a deep part of firearms culture that it feels like a rite of passage for any gun owner. After spending time researching the options, it became clear that the best choice would be from either Arsenal or Zastava. It also becomes very clear that ‘ABC’ is something to remember. (Anything but Century)

The problem we have with Arsenal is, that for as nice as they are, they are still slightly more than we want to pay. The scars of buying junk Romanian AKs for $289 back in the 1990s simply run too deep. And yes, while companies like Meridian Defense, Fuller Phoenix, and Rifle Dynamics make amazing rifles, they’re out of reach for most budgets, mine included. If I have that kind of funds, I’m buying an SR-15 Mod 2, not an AK.

When you really research, we think you’ll find that only a few names really stand out in 2024. Other than Zastava – Arsenal, FB Radom Beryl, and WPB Jack are also solid contenders in the AK market, each bringing something unique to the table. We’ve also got our eyes on Palmetto State’s AK offerings, and we expect that as time goes on, those are going to be the gateway for many new AK enthusiasts.

That said, there’s something special about the Zastava ZPAP— for us. It hits a sweet spot in the market, offering a balance of quality and value that’s tough to beat. But it’s not just us saying that. The ZPAPM70 consistently gets the nod as a “good to go” option on forums and online communities where AK enthusiasts gather. That kind of endorsement matters—especially in the world of AKs, where the stakes are a lot higher.

A poorly-made AK isn’t just a disappointment; it can be downright dangerous. Unlike a subpar AR, which might give you some issues with accuracy or reliability, a poorly-built AK can turn into a serious liability. Think misaligned sights, unreliable feeding, or even catastrophic failures that could put you in harm’s way. When you’re dealing with a rifle platform known for its ruggedness and simplicity, any cut corners or flaws in manufacturing can undermine those strengths. That’s why choosing a trusted, well-built AK like the ZPAPM70 is so crucial.

With the ZPAPM70, you’re not just buying into the allure of the AK-47 platform—you’re investing in a rifle with a proven track record. It’s a rifle that’s built to the specs that matter, with forged components, a robust design, and a reputation for durability. When AK veterans give a rifle their seal of approval, you know it’s one you can trust with your safety. For AR-15 aficionados looking to add an AK to their lineup, the ZPAPM70’s combination of price, performance, and reputation makes it the obvious choice.

A Small Caveat about Zastava

One thing to note right away about the Zastava ZPAPM70 is that it’s a Yugo-pattern AK, which means it has some unique design elements that require specialized accessories. While this slightly limits your options compared to standard AKM-pattern rifles, it’s far from a dealbreaker. The market has responded well, and it’s not difficult to find quality Yugo-specific parts, from furniture to internal components. This small trade-off is more than worth it for the build quality and durability that Zastava brings to the table.

Hands-on with the ZPAP

On paper, the Zastava M70 is impressive—but once you get one in your hands, it’s a completely different experience. We’re not just talking about specs here; this rifle has a presence that’s hard to put into words. The moment you shoulder it, you feel the quality and ruggedness that have made it a legend. We have to say—this rifle is the real deal. It’s not just good; the M70 blew our expectations out of the water, delivering a shooting experience that left us rethinking everything we thought we knew about our favorite rifles.

Our first range session this past weekend (460 rounds of AAC Soviet Arms downrange, zero misfires and zero lube, straight out of the box!) with the M70 reminds us of what made us fall in love with firearms in the first place. There’s something undeniably satisfying about its solid feel and the way it runs like a tank yet balances with surprising ease.

It’s a rifle that grows on you fast, turning into more than just another addition to the safe. It’s become an obsession—one that makes us look forward to every opportunity to shoot it, tweak it, and just admire its craftsmanship. The M70 has that rare ability to transport you back to the excitement of those early days of collecting, where every new gun felt like discovering a whole new world.

The Legacy of Zastava

So, just what is Zastava? Zastava Arms, based in Serbia, has been producing firearms for over 165 years. They’ve earned a strong reputation for high-quality, durable weapons, exporting firearms all over the world. During the Cold War, Zastava’s military rifles became well-known, particularly the M70 series, which was based on the original Soviet AKM design but with a few regional modifications tailored to the needs of the Yugoslavian military. This makes Zastava AKs a bit different than your run-of-the-mill AK-47 clones, giving them a unique appeal. We’ll be diving deep on Zastava as a company at a later date, so stay tuned.

Why the Zastava ZPAPM70?

Today, Zastava USA imports its rifles, including the ZPAPM70, and modifies them to meet U.S. regulations. One of the standout features of the ZPAPM70 for the U.S. market is its cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel. This upgrade from the original military models is specifically designed for longevity and to meet the expectations of U.S. buyers, who often expect better corrosion resistance and accuracy. The chrome-lined barrel, coupled with Zastava’s traditional robust construction, makes it ideal for those looking for an AK that will last through heavy use.

The ZPAPM70 is designed to be a reliable workhorse with a solid balance between price and quality. Here are a few key reasons why this rifle shines:

  1. Quality Build
Zastava’s ZPAPM70 is built using the tried-and-true 1.5mm bulged trunnion receiver, providing extra durability over many competitors in the market. This thicker receiver is more robust and helps mitigate heat and wear over time, adding to the longevity of the rifle. The chrome-lined barrel, another major upgrade from earlier models, also ensures that your rifle will perform under tough conditions and require less frequent maintenance.
  2. Upgraded Features
Modern shooters will appreciate the upgrades Zastava has made. The ZPAPM70 features a side rail for mounting optics, allowing for a more flexible setup compared to the classic AK with only iron sights. Additionally, the adjustable gas system can be fine-tuned for suppressor use or various ammunition types, ensuring reliability across different setups.
  3. Ergonomics and Aesthetics
While purists may prefer a classic wooden stock, Zastava offers options with either traditional wood or polymer furniture, catering to modern tastes. The rifle also comes with a bolt hold-open notch on the safety selector, a subtle but useful feature when it comes to handling the AK’s lack of last-round bolt hold-open. This small but practical improvement adds to the usability of the rifle, especially for new AK owners.

The Price vs. Quality Balance

When it comes to choosing your first AK, price and quality often come into play. Cheaper AKs can be hit or miss in terms of quality, and high-end AKs can easily climb into a price range that rivals premium AR-15 builds. The ZPAPM70, however, strikes a great middle ground. It’s priced competitively, offering significantly more in terms of durability and features than many budget AKs, while still being accessible enough to those not looking to break the bank. In 2024, it’s tough to find a better AK in terms of value for what you get.

AR vs. AK – Which is Superior?

As much as we love the AK platform for its history and rugged reputation, we feel the AR is simply a better overall firearm. The AR-15 matches the AK’s reliability, and in many cases, surpasses it in terms of accuracy and modularity. With an AR, you’re looking at consistent 1 MOA (minute of angle) accuracy, while most AKs, including the ZPAPM70, tend to hover around 3-5 MOA. That gap is significant for those who prioritize precision shooting.

However, that doesn’t mean there’s no place for an AK in your collection. In fact, every gun safe should have an AK. For a knock-around gun that shines at 200 yards and in, an AK is an fantastic choice. The simplicity and durability of the platform make it a go-to option for rough use, and it offers a different shooting experience than the AR.

The AK Ammo Situation

It’s no secret that AK-47 ammunition, particularly 7.62x39mm, has been harder to find in recent years. Factors such as import restrictions and fluctuating global supply chains have made sourcing AK ammo a bit more of a challenge. However, this does not mean the AK platform is dying.

While AR-15 owners enjoy an abundance of 5.56 and .223 ammo on the market, AK owners are seeing a rise in domestic production of 7.62x39mm to meet demand. Although you may need to plan ahead a little more, the AK-47 and its ammo are not disappearing anytime soon. In preparation for some long-term testing, we grabbed 1,400! rounds of the new AAC Soviet Arms 123 grain, and so far, with just over 20 boxes rounds downrange, we are more than happy with it.

Considering 5.56 AKs?

It’s worth noting that 5.56 AKs have historically had a poor reputation for reliability, but that’s not as true today. Some might disagree, though. See video below. Frankly, we say stick with 7.62 x 39 and soak in the AK as it was originally designed. YMMV.

The Zastava Ecosystem

Zastava doesn’t just stop at rifles. They offer a solid ecosystem of products that enhance the AK experience. From high-quality magazines to optics mounts that make it easy to attach red dots or scopes, Zastava’s accessories are designed with the same focus on durability and performance as their rifles. For AK owners who want to build out their setup, Zastava parts are a natural choice. While the AK aftermarket world is flourishing, with countless options from other manufacturers, you likely don’t need to look much further than Zastava’s offerings or reliable parts from Magpul and companies like Xtech.

In short, buy with absolute confidence.
