The shake awake function preserves battery life and kicks the unit into action when movement is sensed. The solar failsafe comes by way of a solar panel on the top of the unit which allows the optic to work by using sunlight, even if your battery is dead. 10 daylight brightness settings and 2 settings for use in conjunction with night vision let you set the brightness just where you need it.
