Col. Jeff Cooper’s ‘scout rifle’ concept still resonates with many serious bolt action shooters. Instead of using an awkward mount to place the scope directly over the action of the rifle, the scout scope resides in front of the action, making loading and cycling the rifle much less problematic. In Cooper’s day, shooters repurposed low magnification pistol scopes for rifle use, with mixed success. Moving from those old setups to a modern 2-7x optic that was purpose built for rifle use is a night and day difference.
